Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5

Sienna Wang-Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5

If your life is coming to an end, I will play you the Requiem of Mozart.

If you are having upsetting days, I will present you with Beethoven’s Sonata.

If you are experiencing love and farewell, I will share with you an opera of Puccini.

If you are wondering about destiny, I will dance with you a Tchaikovsky.

If the Beethoven Fifth is the strike of fate on the door, then the Tchaikovsky Fifth is the dance of The Fate.

There are always songs and dances in Tchaikovsky’s music. Impacted by his traditional culture, Tchaikovsky created many beautiful ballet and dance music. His piety and persistence towards his religion also shows in his creations.

The music starts. The sounds of trumpets stir the air. The darkness of the night comes down to the land. The Fate makes his appearance with the darkness and the orchestra plays his melody. He wears black tailcoat with the scallop-edged lace collars and sleeves. His ruby pendant sparks on his neck. His steps are light but sure. His breaths are calm but provocative. He comes nearer, and welcomes his guests for tonight.

This is the appearance of The Fate. He is obsessing and intriguing. He is too noble to be ignored, too elegant to be offended. He makes people yearn for him, and also fear him. Everything secular is nothing in front of him.

In the darkness, he offers his hand, and starts his solo dance. This is an invitation to his world. And when you are still hesitating, he has already begun his dance. He stands on his tiptoes, then the music gets high spirits. He leads the audience to join his dance, and he opens his arms to make more melodies play for him. He makes the music his most tempting invitation for the audience. He turns round during the triplet, he slides between chords. And those jumps he makes when the wind music rises are dazzling. He is beautiful, elegant, light and gentle. His smile is intoxicating. His every move is captivating, and desiring.

Followed by music, his moves accelerate. In the exciting melodies, there is his main theme again. However, after his ravishing dance, the music is not dark anymore. Instead, it sounds alluring and intriguing.

And the second chapter begins.

Now we are at the palace of The Fate. The romantic melodies created by the French horns start. The music lets our guards down, and we face the sorrow in our deepest memories. But when the sorrow is coming towards us, we start to wonder: By following the step of The Fate, can we relieve ourselves and get the happiness we have been dreaming of?

In the dialogue of French horns and oboes, we walk through the palace. The music reminds us that we are at the palace of The Fate, and there is nowhere to escape.

Then the melodies brighten. We have already walked through the hall of the palace. What to wait and hesitate in this breathtaking palace when there is a golden and sparkle future ahead? However, time passes by, only when you grasp this moment can you find the brief happiness.

Therefore, we follow the melodies and dance in the magnificence and the grandeur of the music. The Fate has never abandoned us, he awaits us ahead. He awaits our surrenders, our desires and our devotes to him.

With the plucks of the violins, fate appears again. He turns around gorgeously, and offers his hand in a dramatic tone. His offer makes us tipsy and obsessive. He seems to be more attractive than the last chapter. He has more than just his appearance and is full of emotions this time. His excitement is derived from our expectation. His fickleness contains our fears. He is always changing, but we always see ourselves in him. He is never touchable, but we always look forward to him. He is irresistible and addictive.

Now there is the third chapter. It is the waltz of the audience and The Fate.

Who could resist him? In his grand palace are his dexterous steps and charming figure. Underneath his black tailcoat is his cold breath and warm blood. His waltz is fascinating. We see his emotions under his mysterious look, and his sincereness behind his stateliness.

He dances swiftly. It is the music composed for him by Tchaikovsky. He dances with each of us. In the music, our steps spark with his guidance, and our spins shine with his support. When he stops, I dance like a swan under his gaze. Without consciousness, I succumb to him under his majestic power.

And the fourth chapter begins.

Now The Fate has got the upper hand, so his main theme is played again. We realize that The Fate is still here. However, after all the music, we no longer feel his coldness. Instead, we are filled with his passion and emotions. We feel his pulses in his darkness, and his passion in his coldness. Under his quiet appearance is his strong power. Under his impeccable perfectness is endless guidance and acceptance.

We look at him, look at him dancing his last chapter. It is his most valuable and fleeting gift for us.

His main theme is the same deep and obsessive. From the cold and treacherous start, to the tender and gentle moment, now it sounds gracious and dignified. He sounds so magnificent, and so emotional. He dances the dance of fate, and dances our admiration, our belief, our struggles, our helplessness, and our surrenders.

He knows that we all belong to him at this moment. Tonight, we get rid of the fetter of the world, we forget the love and hatred from humans. We have no secrets hidden, and no souls bound. We walk towards him, towards his splendors, his dooms and his endlessness.

Therefore, at this moment, we all become religious. Because even if you don’t believe in fate, you believe in Tchaikovsky.
